Our Fabric
Cotton Robin began when our daughter's eczema made even soft clothes uncomfortable. So we choose fabrics for one thing above all: how they feel on sensitive skin. Here's exactly what goes into our clothes.
Bamboo-cotton knit: tops, tees, leggings, shorts and beanies
Most of our clothing is made from a blend of 66% rayon from bamboo, 28% cotton and 6% spandex.
- Rayon from bamboo is made by turning bamboo pulp into a smooth fibre. It gives the fabric its silky, cool-to-the-touch feel. Canadian labelling rules call this fibre rayon, so that's what we call it too.
- Cotton adds structure and breathability.
- Spandex adds a little stretch, so clothes move with your child and keep their shape.
We use the same blend in four different knits:
| Knit | How it feels | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| 1x1 rib, 250 gsm | Fine, soft rib with gentle stretch | Short sleeve tees, long sleeve tops |
| Heavyweight jersey, 250 gsm | Smooth and substantial | Leggings and joggers |
| 2x2 rib, 275 gsm | Textured rib with more stretch | Tanks, girls' crop tops, girls' shorts |
| Stretch French terry, 280 gsm | Soft loops inside, extra cozy | Beanies |
Hemp-cotton chambray: our pants
Our linen-look pants are woven from 55% hemp and 45% cotton in a light 120 gsm chambray. Hemp gives the fabric its natural, linen-like texture and strength for playground knees, and cotton keeps it soft. It's breathable and light for warm days.
What does gsm mean?
gsm (grams per square metre) measures how heavy a fabric is. Higher numbers feel thicker and cozier; lower numbers feel lighter and airier.
Caring for your Cotton Robin clothes
For our bamboo-cotton pieces, machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, then lay flat or hang to dry. Skip the bleach and the tumble dryer to keep them soft and in shape. Always check the care label on each piece.
