How to Choose Clothes for Kids with Sensitive or Eczema-Prone Skin

When our daughter developed eczema, we learned quickly that what she wore mattered almost as much as the creams we used. Scratchy seams, stiff fabrics and clothes that trapped heat could all make an itchy day worse. If you're in the same spot, here's what we look for when choosing clothes for kids with sensitive or eczema-prone skin.

We're parents, not doctors. Every child's skin is different, so always follow the advice of your child's doctor or dermatologist.

1. Smooth, soft fibres

Rough or hairy fibres can rub and irritate already sensitive skin. Look for fabrics with a smooth surface that feel soft against your inner wrist. Many parents find cotton and rayon from bamboo comfortable, while traditional wool is often too scratchy for kids with eczema.

2. Breathability

Overheating and sweat are common itch triggers. Light, breathable fabrics help heat escape, especially during active play. Layering thinner pieces is often more comfortable than one heavy layer, because you can take a layer off when your child warms up.

3. A gentle, flexible fit

Clothes that are too tight rub; clothes that are very loose can bunch up. A little stretch helps clothes move with your child without friction. Look for soft, flat seams and tag-free or soft labels too.

4. Easy, gentle washing

Detergent residue and fragrance can bother sensitive skin. Wash new clothes before the first wear, use a mild, fragrance-free detergent, and consider an extra rinse. See our guide to washing bamboo clothing.

How Cotton Robin fits in

We started Cotton Robin to make the clothes we couldn't find for our own daughter. Our tees, tops, leggings and shorts are made from a smooth bamboo-cotton knit (66% rayon from bamboo, 28% cotton, 6% spandex) that's soft, breathable and stretchy. You can read exactly what's in each piece on our fabric page.
